The Sound of VTEC

The primary cam profiles make more power and torque at the RPMs they operate at than the secondary (VTEC) cam profiles. This makes for a broader powerband, and makes daily driving easier versus having one big cam profile with all the power being up top, or one small cam profile with no power up top.

The Mazda RX Series and Their Rotary Engines

The RX series of Mazda are well known for their rotary engines. What is a rotary engine by the way? A rotary engine is a type of internal combustion engine which uses a rotor to convert pressure into a rotating motion instead of using reciprocating pistons like most cars use today. It is basically a four stroke cycle which is generated in a space between the insider of an oval-like housing and roughly triangular rotor. I really don’t want to go to all the technical details. You can just watch the video below to see how a Rotary engine functions.

The RX-7 which was produced since 1978 up to 2002 evolved into a powerful machine since its inception. Beginning with the SA/FB chassis which was produced from 1979-1980 then the FC chassis and finally the popular FD chassis which runs on a 1.3 Litre 13B-REW Rotary Engine. The third and final generation of the RX-7, FD (with FD3S for the JDM and JM1FD for the USA VIN), was an outright, no-compromise sports car by Japanese standards. It featured an aerodynamic, futuristic-looking body design (a testament to its near 11-year lifespan). The 13B-REW was the first-ever mass-produced sequential twin-turbocharger system to export from Japan, boosting power to 255 hp (190 kW) in 1993 and finally 280 DIN hp (276 hp, 208 kW, the Japanese manufacturers' gentlemen's agreement on engine power) by the time production ended in Japan in 2002.

The RX-8 features a 1.3 liter RENESIS two-rotor engine is available as a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters for manual gear selection, or as a six-speed manual with overdrive. The automatic returns 212 hp, the manual 232. Estimated fuel consumption for the automatic is 18 city, 25 highway; for the manual 18/24.

The Honda Civic Mugen RR Experimental Spec

This experimental model of the Civic Mugen RR is equipped with cutting edge technologies based on the Mugen RR. Weight reduction, combined with chassis strengthening, a higher engine output and added better breaking power are all designed to improve the overall performance of the car.

The car features an aluminum hood for better optimization of the overall car balance between the back and front part of the car. The fenders and bumpers are made of carbon. Designed with a functional lip, to aid in the aerodynamics of sucking air into the break duct will result to further cooling of the breaks. Titanium exhaust manifold are utilized for further weight reduction. The car is almost made up of carbon fiber materials both inside and out.

The Honda Civic Mugen RR Experimental Spec. feature a tuned engine with the capacity increased to 2.2 litre. Based on the K20A engine, the intake and outlet has been optimized to bring about further increase in the power department, the engine now produces a healthy 260PS at a screaming 8,200rpm. Maximum torque is 235Nm at 6,000rpm and this would give you a hint that this car is all about spirited driving; after all it’s what the car was created for.

Mugen has equipped the car with an i-TCMS which is an intelligent-Tire Condition Monitoring System that monitors the tire air pressure and temperature in real time. No doubt this item is a confidence booster especially during fast driving and to add that you can also adjust the damping force from the cockpit while driving. Aided by the special Bridgestone Potenza RE070 225/40R18 tyres it would definitely increase grip especially coming into your favorite corners.

This is truly a remarkable car. With all the upgrades from an ordinary Civic into a full spec sports car made by Mugen, there is no doubt that car enthusiasts can look forward to a whole new level of driving experience with the Honda Civic Mugen RR Experimental Spec. This is by far the best example of Honda’s slogan, The Power of Dreams.
